The ultimate value of a company is not always what a founder had in mind at the start.
For example, Mcdonald's started as a burgers, fries, and shakes outfit. In time Mcdonald's evolved into a predictable food experience around the world.
Today it still sells fast food, but its wealth is in fact from real estate.
The question for you at this point, before you dig into any other details about your company.
What is the ultimate purpose of the company that you are building?
Wordperfect was a technology company that was once a dominant player in the world of personal computers. The software word product was such a big deal that they named the company word perfect, which is kind of a mistake, when word perfect the company tried to launch other products it was confusing to customers.
Eventually, word perfect faded to obscurity and was taken over by other products and companies with bigger visions.
Microsoft Word, for example, was originally not better than Wordperfect, but it ultimately won and in no small part due to the fact that it was part of a company that had a bigger vision of what it was working to accomplish.
Let's say you got an idea for a product that will transport a person in a beam of light to the surface of another planet. You build the product and sell it with great success.
Will that be your only product? Will you have other transportation products? So you are essentially a transportation company, or are you building a technology company that will license or sell technology to other companies?
Possibly you will harvest information about who uses your planetary transporter, and you start to sell that information about who uses it, how often from where to where and more.
So others can use the information for example to market their products or services which then makes you a big data informatics company!
